Unique Summer School Kids 'Camp' Feeds Heads, Hearts

From Laurie Tillet:

Herndon, VA...Over 100 elementary school children are getting a groundbreaking summer school experience, thanks to a unique partnership between Hutchison Elementary School and Floris United Methodist Church. "Camp Hutchison" runs through August 12 and is facilitated by 130 volunteers from the church and local community. Funding for the camp has been largely provided by money donated during free will offerings taken at Floris' Christmas Eve services last December.

The camp combines education, enrichment, and nutrition in a four week, half day program. In addition to being taught math and language arts by certified teacher volunteers, the children, grades 1-3, enjoy daily activities such as art, drama, music, science/nature and recreation. Campers also receive breakfast and lunch, as well as a healthy snack to take home daily.

Hit the Trail

Hit the Trail

What would you expect a four-and-three-quarter-year-old to say at the end of a four-and-a-half-mile hike that she just finished using her own two feet? “What a wonderful day,” Sofi announced when we walked past the old Tavern (that I was wishing was still a tavern) at Great Falls National Park.
