HERNDON, Va. (WUSA) -- It was the bottom of the sixth and the score had been gridlocked at one apiece since the first inning. The Hornets were hungry for a victory -- after all, it was their senior night -- and Herndon was running out of time to secure a victory.
Mary Dugan stepped up to plate, soaking up the scene. Senior Veronika Funke was on first and Robinson had been flawless in the outfield all game, so Dugan went for the bunt. She lost control of the bat, strike one. Next, a soft plunk sounded -- Dugan laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt and her teammate Funke was able to race from first to third on a bobbled ball.
Although Michelle Le's ensuing sacrifice fly wasn't as breathtaking as Dugan's perfectly executed small-ball, it got the trick done. Funke raced home to help clinch the Hornets' victory.
"It was a close game, both teams were fighting for it ... my girls just wanted it more," said Herndon head coach Jourdan Coombs.
Robinson's defense was on point all evening and the Rams rallied during the top of the seventh, trying to tie up the game. Unfortunately for the Rams, they stranded two runners on base.
Concorde District play begins next week.
