4 Family Members Found Dead At House In Virginia

HERNDON, Va. (WUSA) -- Fairfax County police say four members of a family were found dead inside a house in Herndon, Va. on Tuesday. Officers will be at the scene in the 13300 block of Point Rider Lane until 9 a.m. Wednesday. They say the family's bodies were removed overnight and a medical examiner will determine the cause and manner of their deaths.

9News's Peggy Fox reports that neighbors say the family was seen at a picnic on Sunday, and are speculating that whatever happened to the family took place Sunday night.

The employers of both the husband and the wife came to the home on Tuesday morning because neither the man nor woman had come to work. Both employers arrived at the house at the same time and alerted police.

9News has learned the names of the family members, however, we will not release that information without official confirmation. Police have not confirmed the identities and are in the process of notifying the next of kin.

The man and woman were in their 50s and had two sons.  One son was a sophomore or 10th grader at Westfield High School and the other was in 8th grade at Rachel Carson Middle School. Grief counselors will be on hand at both of those schools Wednesday.

It is believed but not confirmed that the husband worked in the IT field.

Neighbors say they often saw the parents outdoors, sitting outside on their front porch. One mother told Peggy Fox that she had just seen the woman at Back to School night, describing her as a "wonderful mother." She was often seen in the neighborhood walking or cycling and the boys were outside kicking soccer balls.

The couple were the original owners of the home and had owned the house for 27 years.

Stunned neighbors say they never saw any sign of trouble and knew of no financial difficulties. No gunshots were heard.

A candlelight vigil will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Floris United Methodist Church in Herndon.
