VIENNA, Va. (WUSA) -- Senior forward Nick Baietti scored both of Madison's goals in Friday night's 2-2 tie with the Herndon Hornets.
His final goal almost didn't happen.
Well into stoppage time in the second half, Herndon was called for a handball inside of the goalies box, giving Baietti a chance to knot the game up. The heart and soul of the Warhawks delivered the tie on the penalty shot, even though the Hornets controlled the tempo throughout the game. Seconds later the whistle would blow to begin overtime.
"We didn't know what to expect coming into this game," said Baietti. Herndon was missing their top player Patrick McLaughlin, a Radford commit who was traveling with his club soccer team in Florida.
Baietti added "We're quite happy with the draw."
Herndon jumped out on the scoreboard first with an Anthry Milla rebound late in the first half. Baietti responded -- again in stoppage time -- with a deflection goal of his own.
"Our weakness is defending balls into the box," spoke Hornets head coach Sean Lanigan. "Opponents have scored that way on us in each game this year. That is something we need to address."
In overtime Herndon nearly wound up with the lead. Striker Abdiraham Yusef juked out Warhawk goalie Connor Mills as he chased the junior to the right of the box. But Yusef's ensuing tap shot nudged the post. The opportunity was squandered.
Herndon (2-0-2) will take on First Colonial, a Virginia Beach team, this Saturday at home. Madison (1-2-1) will host Hayfield on Tuesday.
