Man dies after setting himself on fire at Herndon gas station

HERNDON, Va. (WUSA9) -- A man died after he set himself on fire at a gas station in Herndon.

According to Fairfax County fire officials, a 50-year-old man went to the Sunoco gas station on Centreville Road in Herndon at around 3 p.m. Monday.

The man bought about 56 cents worth of gas, went behind the station, doused himself with the gas and set himself on fire, fire officials said.

People at the gas station (both customers and staff) used whatever water they could find to douse the flames.

When paramedics arrived on scene they found the man with second and third degree burns covering more than 80 percent of his body. He was transported to Medstar Washington Hospital, where he later died.
