Firefighters Help Bring New Winter Coats to Kids

From Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department:

Fairfax County firefighters, in cooperation with the Coats for Kids Foundation, Progressive Firefighters of Fairfax County, Inc., and the Fairfax County Professional Firefighters and Paramedics, will collect and distribute new winter coats for children and youths through high school age, Thursday, October 28, 2010, 11 a.m., at Penn Daw Fire and Rescue Station 11, 6624 Hulvey Terrace, Alexandria, Virginia.

Through generous support and donations from organizations and businesses, it is anticipated that approximately 1,000 youths and their families will benefit. This is the fifth year firefighters and the department have sponsored this community event.

Farmers Market to Close October 28th

The Farmers' Market in Herndon that has been running since Thursday, May 6 is set to close this Thursday, October 28. Don't miss your last chance to enjoy the market! It is open from 8:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.

The market takes place in the 700 block of Lynn Street in front of the red caboose and features a wide variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, meats, eggs, jams, jellies, cheese, dry rubs for your meats and fish, plants, salsa and home baked goods.  All items are homegrown or prepared by the vendors at the market.

Free event promises fun for the whole family

Learn to Stuff A Scarecrow at Frying Pan Farm Park

Families are invited to Frying Pan Farm Park’s scarecrow making workshop on Sunday, October 17, 2010. Bring an old outfit and a pair of pantyhose to stuff. Create a traditional denim-clad scarecrow, or get creative. Frying Pan will supply materials to give your scarecrow’s face a special touch. Take your scarecrow home to display during Halloween season. Then store it for use next year to protect your garden from unwanted visitors.

This program is held outside the visitor center from 1 to 2 p.m. and again from 2 to 3 p.m. Participants are advised to dress for the weather. The program will be canceled it rains. The cost is $7 per person.

While you’re visiting the farm, take a tractor-drawn wagon ride through the woods and fields. Learn about the park’s diverse plants and animals during this scenic 20-minute ride. Rides are $3 per person.

Murder in Green Meadows On Stage Now

Edlen Street Players is presenting Murder in Green Meadows now through October 30. The production is produced by Mary Ann Halla and directed by Adam Konowe. The Industrial Strength Theatre is located at 269 Sunset Park Drive in Herndon, VA.

This Weekend: Loudoun Ballet Company Presents Deep in the Forest

Deep in the Forest, an original story ballet created by Artistic Director Maureen Miller, premiered in the spring of 2005 with rave reviews. Deep in the Forest tells the story of a fairy princess, her unicorn, a pesky dragon, and a host of woodland characters that are bound to charm audiences of all ages with its happy ending and moral lesson.The inspiration for Deep in the Forest came from Miller's fairy collection, which numbers about 100 pieces. And not surprisingly, many of those fairies were gifts from ballet students over the years.Join LBC and its talented dancers this weekend only Potomac Falls High School. Showtimes are Saturday, October 9, at 1 PM and 4PM. And Sunday, October 10, at 4PM. Tickets will be sold at the door and are general admission. Prices are $15.00 for Adults, and $10.00 for Children (12 & under) & Seniors (60 & above).
