Living Well Expo Coming Soon to Herndon

Announcing The Living Well Expo, the area's first region-wide health expo! Held on Saturday, September 11, 2010 at the Dulles Hyatt in Herndon, presented by Title Sponsor Anthem Blue Cross & Blue Shield, The Living Well Expo will bring together area residents and health care professionals and organizations under one roof for an entire day.  The Expo with feature health care exhibitors, interactive health & fitness demonstrations, a healthy food stage featuring demonstrations and cook-offs, free health screenings, entertainment, food, and much more!  We are also pleased to announce that Radio Disney will be prominently featured, bringing their "Move It" campaign to the Expo.  This event will be free to the public.

Herndon Community Center Introduces Revised Fees

The Herndon Community Center continues to offer classes for all ages and all interests. These classes are year round and give you the opportunity to learn some new skills or improve on the ones you have for a variety of different activities. Starting on September 7, the Herndon Community Center will have revised fees for admission and passes. Also, the center hours starting on September 7 are as follows:

Monday – Friday               6:00 a.m.

Road Paving in Progress

Work on the annual asphalt repaving project began on Monday. The repaving project is aimed to improve the safety of the streets of Herndon.

Herndon residents should be aware of alternate routes during the paving to avoid delays. While notices will be posted door-to-door, you can call 703-435-6860, the Herndon Maintenance Facility, Public Works, for more information.

Paving on Van Buren Street between Elden and Monrore streets and northbound lanes from the intersection of Spring and Van Buren streets to the W&OD trail are in the course of planning.

Commander Swim Season Coming Up

The 2010-2011 swim season is right around the corner. Head coach, Bruce Andersen, is holding a mandatory meeting for all Commander parents on September 8.

The meeting will be held at 7:00 p.m. in the Herndon Community Center at 814 Ferndale Avenue. For more information about the swim team you can contact Coach Anderson at Bruce.Andersen@herndon-va.gov or call him at 703-435-6800 X 2122.

Come Play Some Drums Tonight!

Tonight at 7:00 p.m. there is a drum circle at Lake Fairfax in Herndon, VA. It will take place by the lake near the dock. To get there, you just pass the water park, and the drum circle will be before the picnic areas by the merry-go-round. Feel free to bring some extra instruments if you have them and something to sit on. Get ready to play some beats!

Community Center Holiday Closures

The Herndon Community Center will be closed August 28, 29 and September 4 through 6 for the Labor Day holiday. The center will be open on August 30 through September 3, but there will be limited operating hours on these days to only accept registrations for Fall programs or classes, admission sales and passes. The hours will be 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

During the center closures there will be no programs or classes and the facilities will be closed for public use. If you would like more information, you can call the center at 703-787-7300.



Smart Markets to Continue Through October 29

Smart Markets Inc., founded in early 2008 by Jean Janssen, is the newest group of farmer’s markets to the Northern Virginia area. Janssen herself has been a resident of Northern Virginia for 25 years. These markets serve Centreville, Fairfax Corner, Gainesville, Herndon, Oakton and Reston and provide guaranteed producer-only farmers’ markets.
